Herbert Needleman, M.D.

Herbert Needleman, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Needleman is known for his groundbreaking studies at Harvard in the 1970’s on the effects of lead exposure on children that led to national government bans on the use of lead in paints, gasoline, and food and beverage containers. Continuing this work, he has subsequently authored studies showing linkages between lead exposure and various cognitive and behavioral problems in children. For this body of work and its effect on national and international public health policy, Dr. Needleman has received various awards including the Second Annual Heinz Award in the Environment in 1994.
